In my 20 plus years in the cruise industry one question comes up time and time again. Should we pre-pay our gratuities? There is no definitive answer to this question; it always comes down to the individual customers’ preference. From my experience I would say it is generally a 50/50 split.
What are the benefits of pre-paying?
The majority of cruise lines will offer you a reduced price if you pre-pay your gratuities. By pre-paying it doesn’t eat into your spending money. You can relax knowing your tips are pre-paid.
What if I don’t want to pre-pay?
Let’s get one thing straight, tips are NOT compulsory. Although expected, they cannot be forced on you. If you choose not to pre-pay your tips you will find that the cruise lines will add them on to your on board expense account on a daily basis allowing you to pay for them at the end of your cruise. You will find some people would still like these taken off their account allowing them to pay what they want at their discretion at the end of the cruise, this is also fine you just need to advise guest services on board and they will remove them.
If you want to travel with a cruise line that includes tips in the cost of your cruise then you have some options. Marella cruises (formerly Tui) have always included them in the cost and much more recently both MSC and P&O include them for all British & Irish guests.
